A house that outlived all confines of space

Five cents of land at Keezhalencherry in Kozhikode. That was all Jayaprakash and Sreejitha had when they set out to build their dream home. But Nikunjam outlived all confines of space and today, it stands regally on this limited stretch of land.

Every bit of land space has been utilized to the fullest. Even the gates can be folded up and have been built closely into the compound wall. The garden is minimal in design. A small patch of green and a few plants are all that spread a little color. A pebble court within the green patch gives a designer touch to the place.

The elevation is in the contemporary style. While the foundation has been laid in granite, the walls are all in laterite blocks. The wood used is teak. The roof of the sit-out extends to the car porch as well. The wood color tone of the porch roof enhances the finish of the structure.

The TV space has been set up in the living room itself. A wooden swing sets the mood of the room and what looks like a bright wallpaper heightens the effect of the TV wall. But this is no wallpaper. The wall has been designed in paint. The ready-made furniture look simple, yet sophisticated.

The dining room too sports a highlighting designer wall. Here too, the furniture, though trendy, looks neat. The vitrified floor tiles add to the general dcor.

A specially designed reaper window by the staircase landing lets in light in plenty. Adjacent to this lies the pooja space.

Wood and iron have gone into designing the staircase. The wall space by the staircase has been highlighted with designs laid in granite. The space below the staircase allows for a small courtyard.

The kitchen is a splash of color. Automotive paint on marine plywood kitchen shutters brings in the brightness. Since there’s a separate work area, the stylish kitchen can double up as a pantry. That’s precisely why instead of a kitchen sink, the place has only a small wash basin.

There are two bedrooms, up and one down. One of the bedrooms upstairs has been designed in such a way that a lot of changes can be done on it in future if the need arises. The master bedroom wall has a special design layout with the leftover plywood frames that came from the kitchen.
