In Kerala, we come across numerous roofing options to choose from, here are some of the most commonly used roofing materials that gives every home its perfect crown:

  • Clay Tiles:

Clay tiles are one of the most common roofing options in Kerala from decades and are now available in many variants, shapes, profiles and colour tones.. These are ideal for all terrains and suited for even very harsh climatic conditions. While choosing clay tiles for your home, make sure you opt for the right grade of it, depending on the usage. The more the usage of a particular area of the roof, the higher the grade of the tile should be. Good interlocking between tiles is important in regions with strong winds

  • Variety roofing Tiles

The attraction of roofing tiles are mainly in its variance of finishing. One of such tile is the one with powder finishing, which does not need to be painted and will retain its new-look for a long time. Another variety of tile is the one that is similar to wall tiles with glazed finishing. These tiles too will retain its new-look for longer period and there is no need to worry about fading colours either.

  • Trafford Sheets:

    Trafford sheets are among the numerous roofing options that can aid faster and cheaper roofing for a home. Being durable in almost all weather and its resistance to rusting makes it a good option to prevent leakage of concrete roofs and for extension work of a home.

  • Corrugated Sheets:

    Corrugated sheets are manufactured using various materials which include, aluminium, GI, PVC and Poly Carbonate. The notable advantage of these sheets are that these are light weight and are available in any size based on the requirements.


  • Poly Carbonated Sheets

    Poly Carbonated sheets are uniquely designed to prevent UV rays. These sheets are long-lasting and are equipped with the ability to resist even adverse heat and prevents leaking completely.


After you choose the right roofing material, its the colour that matters. Today, these roofing materials are available in a wide range of colours too. The most common colours include Dark blue, Terracotta, Green, Red-Brown, Blue-Green, Golden Brown and so on.

  1. While preparing the plan of your home, make sure you decide where all you wish to use clay tiles and do calculate the expense.

  2. Avoid using clay tiles in those parts of the house where you might end up having trouble painting, else use high grade tiles in such area.

  3. When you design the roof, do take in to consideration the weight of the tiles used.

  4. While laying roofing tiles over a concrete roof the cement plastering should be checked and made intact.

  5. In case your home has roofing in multiple levels, avoid clay tiles where water from higher level pours down to the lower.
